| Subject: | Bicentennial Celebration of Grace United Methodist Church |
| Grace United Methodist Church – our neighbor across from the Capitol Building on State Street – has played a key role in the history of the City of Harrisburg. The original church was built in 1820 and housed the first Methodist congregation in the city. While the congregation met in several locations throughout the city in its early years, the beautiful building located on State Street has been its home since construction was completed in 1878. When the State Capitol Building was tragically lost in a fire in 1897, Grace United Methodist Church opened its doors to our state legislature and permitted the use of its building for as long as necessary. Had the legislature not convened in the rooms of the church, the state capital would have likely moved to Philadelphia. It is thanks to the congregation of Grace United Methodist Church that the seat of our state government remained in Harrisburg. This year marks the bicentennial of the establishment of Grace United Methodist Church and in commemoration of this momentous event, I plan to introduce a resolution recognizing this important milestone anniversary. It is important that we join in the celebration of Grace United Methodist Church and honor the congregation for the role it has played in our collective history.
