House of Representatives
Session of 2019 - 2020 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: September 9, 2020 08:26 AM
From: Representative Donna Bullock and Rep. Aaron Bernstine
To: All House members
Subject: Child Care Tax Deduction

According to the Center for American Progress, it costs nearly $1,230 a month and $15,000 a year to provide center-based child care for infants in the United States. A family making state median income would have to spend 18 percent of their income to cover the cost of child care for an infant. Further, this type of care costs 61 percent more than that for a preschooler.

Child care costs continue to be a financial burden for working families in America and in our very own state. Families want to provide their children with the right care while also saving their hard-earned money for important milestones like college and retirement. To provide relief for these families, we are introducing legislation that would allow taxpayers to deduct up to $10,000 in child care expenses on their annual personal income tax return. This is a re-introduction of Representative Comitta’s House Bill 2035 from the 2017-2018 Legislative Session.
