MEMORANDUM

Posted: September 3, 2020 07:37 AM
From: Representative Brian Sims
To: All House members
Subject: World AIDS Day (December 1, 2020)

Since the beginning of the global AIDS epidemic, 32.7 million people have lost their lives due to AIDS-related illnesses, making it one of the most important global public health issues in recorded history. Despite significant progress in the AIDS response, many barriers to HIV testing remain. Stigma and discrimination still deter people from seeking preventative measures and HIV testing, and many people living with or at risk of HIV wait until becoming ill and symptomatic before getting tested. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 90% of new infections could be adverted by diagnosing people living with HIV and ensuring they receive prompt, ongoing care and treatment.

Since 1988, “World AIDS Day” has been an opportunity for people across the world to unite in raising awareness about the HIV/AIDS epidemic and encouraging progress in the prevention and treatment of the disease. With one in seven people living with HIV in the United States unaware of their infection, “World AIDS Day” is an important reminder that HIV has not gone away and there is still a vital need to raise money, increase awareness and fight prejudice.

Please consider supporting this opportunity to join other states and countries across the world in recognizing December 1, 2020, as “World AIDS Day” in Pennsylvania.
