Subject: | Recognizing September 30, 2020, as “NICU Awareness Day” in Pennsylvania |
Welcoming a child into the world is an exciting time, and while all families hope for a healthy baby, deliveries do not always go as planned. Whatever the complication, some newborns may require the specialized care that is only available in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs). It is for this reason that I will be reintroducing a measure to recognize September 30, 2020, as “NICU Awareness Day” in Pennsylvania. As more than 500,000 newborns are admitted to NICUs every year, these units often maintain the advanced technology and trained health care professionals needed to care for the most fragile patients. Unfortunately, many NICU babies will experience complications that persist beyond their stay in the hospital and families can find the necessary support lacking or unavailable. “NICU Awareness Day” provides support to the entire NICU community and brings attention to the research and resources that are still needed in this area of healthcare. I hope that you will join me in bringing awareness to the families affected by NICUs and the incredible professionals that take care of infants and their loved ones in the most vulnerable of times. Thank you for your consideration. (Please note that last year's NICU Awareness Day resolution was HR 504.) |
