MEMORANDUM

Subject: Dyslexia Awareness Month – October 2020

Dyslexia, also known as developmental reading disorder, is a language-based learning disability that affects the areas of the brain that support the interpretation of language. Symptoms of dyslexia include slow or inaccurate reading, poor spelling, poor writing, or mixing up similar words. An estimated 15 to 20 percent of individuals in the United States have symptoms of dyslexia, but many go for years without a proper diagnosis.

Moreover, students with dyslexia are likely to struggle with several aspects of academic learning. This can include a loss of self-esteem, general reading problems that may persist into adulthood, and an increased risk of dropping out of school entirely. Students who receive early and correct diagnoses of this disorder can receive the appropriate teaching methods to ensure successful academic growth. To draw attention to this often misunderstood language-based learning disability and the large percentage of residents in the Commonwealth who experience symptoms, I will be re-introducing a resolution to designate October 2020 as “Dyslexia Awareness Month” in Pennsylvania.

Please join me in co-sponsoring this important legislation as a significant step in ensuring that those affected by dyslexia may get the necessary support.
