Subject: | Recognizing October 2020 as LGBT History Month |
Since 1994, the month of October has been recognized as LGBT History Month. Rodney Wilson created the month-long celebration to facilitate the teaching of gay and lesbian history across the nation and to celebrate the accomplishments of numerous influential individuals. Without these individuals playing such a vital role in progressing LGBT rights, our modern-day LGBT movement would not be the same. Pennsylvania has been a critical component in the advancement of civil rights for the LGBT community. In 1965, the City of Philadelphia was host to one of the first organized LGBT protests in United States history, and numerous advocates for the advancement of the LGBT community came from Pennsylvania. Cheryl Dunye, a lesbian filmmaker, grew up in Philadelphia and created films that explored the intersection of race, sexuality, and personal identity. Billy Strayhorn, a gay man from Pittsburgh, wrote arrangements for musicals that challenged racist representations of people of color. By continuing to celebrate and teach about LGBT history in our state, we can cultivate a culture of love, acceptance, and safety for all Pennsylvanians. To commemorate our history and the important figures that have propelled the LGBT movement forward, I will be introducing a resolution recognizing October 2020 as LGBT History Month in Pennsylvania. Please join me in showing your support of the LGBT community by co-sponsoring this resolution. |
