| Subject: | Resolution designating October 6, 2020 as “German American Day in Pennsylvania” |
| German immigrants and German Americans have contributed much throughout Pennsylvania’s history. On October 6, 1683, thirteen families arrived in America from the German city of Krefeld. Once here, they established Germantown, Pennsylvania. For the next 100 years, an estimated 100,000 German immigrants coming to North America settled in Pennsylvania, comprising a third of Philadelphia’s population by the 1760s. Throughout the years, millions of German immigrants have come to the United States and this Commonwealth in pursuit of personal and religious freedoms and economic opportunity. Roughly 3.3 million Pennsylvanians claim German ancestry, making it one of the state’s largest ancestry groups. To this day, the relationship between Germany and Pennsylvania remains strong through a robust trade relationship. German Americans are rightfully proud of how their deep cultural, historical, and familial ties have helped strengthen this strong transatlantic relationship. Please join me in honoring German American heritage in Pennsylvania by cosponsoring this resolution. |
