Subject: International Underground Railroad Month – September 2020
 
Pennsylvania played a key role in the movement of enslaved peoples to freedom during the 19th century via the Underground Railroad.  Countless safehouses, hiding places, and escape routes crisscrossed the state and Pennsylvanians, some acting as “stationmasters,” risked their own freedom to help their brothers and sisters escape bondage.  We must recognize the importance of the Underground Railroad and the role that our state and its citizens played.
For this reason, I plan to introduce a resolution designating September 2020 as “International Underground Railroad Month” in Pennsylvania.  This designation will help to honor this state and its people as well as all those who have fought and continue to fight for their freedom. 
Please join me in co-sponsoring this resolution and help to honor all those who have taken such great risks for freedom.  Your consideration is greatly appreciated.
