Subject: Blue Shirt Day® World Day of Bullying Prevention™ - Stomp Out Bullying - October 5, 2020

As many of you may know, October is National Bullying Prevention Awareness Month. Bullying is physical, verbal, sexual, or emotional harm or intimidation intentionally directed at a person or group of people. In recent years, bullying has become more insidious due to technology. The Internet and cell phones can make bullying inescapable for many victims.

Thousands of Pennsylvania children and adolescents are affected by bullying annually. Research shows that targets of bullying are more likely to acquire physical, emotional, and learning problems and that many bullying victims may find it difficult to concentrate in school, show a decline in grades, and lose self-esteem, self-confidence, and self-worth.

Student education on how to address bullying for peers is critical, as is the support of adults. Additionally, it is vital that we act collectively – in our communities and as policy makers – to raise awareness of bullying and bullying prevention.

That is why I intend to introduce a resolution designating October 5, 2020 as Blue Shirt Day® World Day of Bullying Prevention™. STOMP Out Bullying™, a leading national anti-bullying and cyberbullying organization for kids and teens, first created Blue Shirt Day® World Day of Bullying Prevention™ in 2008. Each year, on the first Monday of October, STOMP Out Bullying™ asks students, schools, parents and businesses to go blue on that day by wearing a blue shirt.

Please join me in sponsoring this timely resolution, so that we can add our voices to this important effort.
