| The COVID-19 emergency has had a dramatic impact on our students. Schools have been closed statewide since March 13, 2020, and with each passing day the fate of the 2020-21 school year becomes less clear. We cannot allow an entire generation of our students to fall behind. Students have already lost three months of education at the end of the 2019-20 school year. While schools were required under Act 13 to develop continuity of education plans, the quality and quantity of instruction at the end of last school year widely varied. Plans are changing every day, guidance is changing every day, and we are setting our students up for failure and another year lost in pursuing their dreams. In order to ensure our students are not left behind, I am introducing legislation that will allow students and families to have the option to continue their education and extracurricular activities for an additional year to make up for the loss of instruction and competition during the 2019-20 and 2020-21 school years. I would urge all members to join me in co-sponsoring this legislation to ensure that our students still have the opportunity to pursue their passions, goals and dreams throughout and following this pandemic. |
