MEMORANDUM

Posted: August 5, 2020 01:15 PM
From: Representative Angel Cruz
To: All House members
Subject: Recognizing Pedro Rivera - Secretary of Pennsylvania’s Department of Education

On August 4, 2020, Pedro Rivera announced that he would be stepping down from his role as Secretary of Pennsylvania’s Department of Education, which he has held since being appointed by Governor Wolf in 2015. Under his leadership, the Department adopted and implemented the landmark basic education funding formula, Future Ready PA Index, and Pennsylvania’s Every Student Succeeds Act State Plan.

Originally from Philadelphia, Secretary Rivera spent 13 years at the School District of Philadelphia before serving as the first Latino superintendent of the School District of Lancaster. During his tenure, the District saw improved graduation rates, notable improvements in reading proficiency scores, and enhanced college preparation programs participation. In September 2014, he was selected by the White House as a Champion of Change for his efforts to transform urban education with his holistic approach to student success.

Secretary Rivera’s leadership has been critical during the Commonwealth’s response to COVID-19 and his work to support local schools through state education policy will be even more significant during these challenging times for public education. As such, I will be introducing a resolution to recognize the work of Secretary Pedro Rivera and honor his continuing commitment to educational equity.
