MEMORANDUM

Posted: August 4, 2020 11:31 AM
From: Representative Melissa L. Shusterman
To: All House members
Subject: Refuse the Cost-of-Living Adjustment

In five short months, the COVID-19 pandemic brought about unprecedented and devastating losses in lives and livelihoods across the state of Pennsylvania.  Moreover, the temporary closure of businesses to mitigate further spread of this virus with no known cure has cost the state billions in revenue and caused the unemployment rate to skyrocket. Hardworking Pennsylvanians are still coping with the aftermath of this temporary closure and are still struggling to meet their everyday needs.

The tireless people of this great state deserve to know that we, as state lawmakers, understand the hardships they face through this ongoing global pandemic.  We must demonstrate that – amidst a pandemic that has claimed lives and decimated the economy – we continue to place the needs of our residents above ourselves.  For these reasons, I plan to introduce a resolution which urges members of the General Assembly to refuse a cost-of-living adjustment for the next three years or at any time in which unemployment in the state is above 10%.

This is a commonsense, yet profound resolution that will demonstrate we place service above self.  Please join me in co-sponsoring this resolution.  Your consideration is greatly appreciated.
