MEMORANDUM

Posted: July 23, 2020 01:59 PM
From: Representative Kristine C. Howard
To: All House members
Subject: Co-Sponsorship: Employee Name Tag Safety Act

People, especially minors and young women, working in retail and other public settings are vulnerable to stalking, and required name tags make the employee easier for perpetrators to track down, given the prevalence of social media such as Facebook and LinkedIn, which generally feature a person’s truthful name.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly 1 in 6 women and 1 in 17 men will be stalked at some point in their lives. As social media becomes more pervasive, the threat of both cyber and physical stalking becomes greater by the day.

In response to this rising concern, I plan on introducing a bill that would prohibit the use of truthful first or last names on work name tags, therefore protecting the identity of workers. These simple measures will make the workplace safer for millions of people across Pennsylvania at very little cost to the Commonwealth or the employers.

Please join me in supporting this important legislation to ensure the safety of all workers in Pennsylvania. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Takesha Latham in my Harrisburg office at (717) 783-4088 or at tlatham@pahouse.net

Introduced as HB2889
