MEMORANDUM

Posted: June 24, 2020 05:04 PM
From: Representative Joseph C. Hohenstein
To: All House members
Subject: Co-sponsorship request: Establishing Limits on the Use of Consumer Fireworks

Fireworks are a great way to celebrate a holiday or special occasion.  We can enjoy them at a planned event or in the backyard of our home, surrounded by family and friends.  However, joyous occasions can quickly dissipate when fireworks are not used responsibly.

While many around the Commonwealth enjoy the freedom to set off fireworks, most are cognizant of their neighbors and try to maintain decorum by limiting the hours of the day they use fireworks.  Unfortunately, there are some who do not.  I have fielded many calls from constituents requesting that we do something about the constant barrage of fireworks in their neighborhood, and not just on holidays.

In an effort to address these concerns, I will be introducing legislation that would prohibit the use of fireworks between the hours of 10 p.m. and 8 a.m. every day, except holidays, or if a permit has been issued by a municipality for their use.  The bill would also provide penalties for second and subsequent violations of the law with fines ranging from $100 to $200.

Please join me in sponsoring this legislation to help deal with this problem, while maintaining the freedom to enjoy fireworks!

Introduced as HB2657
