Subject: Student Loan Forgiveness Program for Nurses

Over the past three months, nurses throughout our Commonwealth have been on the frontlines trying to slow the spread of COVID-19, while also caring for those who were afflicted by the virus. The nurses in this Commonwealth stepped up to meet this challenge head on and without being asked. They knowingly put themselves in danger of catching COVID-19 so they could continue to provide exemplary care to their patients. Their selfless dedication helped slow the spread of COVID-19, while helping many patients recover from the virus.

Our Commonwealth owes all our nurses a debt of gratitude. To recognize the important role our nurses have and will continue to play in the fight against COVID-19, I soon plan to introduce legislation that will create a student loan forgiveness program for nurses. Under my proposed legislation, a registered nurse, certified registered nurse practitioner, or clinical nurse specialist would be eligible to receive 50% of their student loans forgiven, up to a maximum of $100,000. To be eligible, the applicant must be a citizen of this Commonwealth and have successfully completed at least 6 months of full-time employment at a health care facility. Additionally, to receive the loan forgiveness, the applicant must agree to remain employed at the health care facility for a period of three years.

This loan forgiveness program will show our appreciation for all that our nurses have done in the battle against COVID-19. Please join me in co-sponsoring this important legislation.
