Subject: COVID-19: College Student Lease Agreements

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to heavily impact Pennsylvanians throughout the state, one group has consistently been left out of both federal and state relief efforts – college students.  With many colleges and universities now closed and some continuing to be closed throughout the upcoming fall semester, students who have been renting apartments are stuck in leases that they must continue to pay for until the end of term.

My legislation aims to give college students much-needed financial relief by allowing them to terminate leases without penalties and payment of the remainder of their rent during the current COVID-19 pandemic if their school has cancelled on-campus instruction.  This would allow college students to focus more on their education and be more financially secure without being burdened by an unnecessary lease.

As legislators, we have a duty to make sure our constituents come first, and our college students are no exception.  Without assistance, the financial roadblocks college students already face will only grow.  Please join me in co-sponsoring this legislation to help students during these trying times.

Introduced as HB2827
