Subject: Removing Candidate Petition Requirements During a Disaster Emergency

The COVID-19 pandemic has shown us that our process for nominating and electing candidates for public office is ill-equipped to handle limited in-person interactions.

Our system hinges on person-to-person exchanges. We have few stop-gap measures for dealing with how a disaster emergency can impact our elections. This is why I am introducing legislation to remedy one piece of this problem.

My bill removes the requirement that candidates circulate and file nomination petitions when there is a declared disaster emergency. In place of circulating and filing petitions, candidates for public office will be able to get on the ballot by filing an affidavit and a $250 payment.

Join me in supporting this legislation and help to ensure our election system is prepared for handling future disaster emergencies.

Introduced as HB2631
