MEMORANDUM

Posted: April 6, 2020 02:25 PM
From: Representative Steven R. Malagari
To: All House members
Subject: Covid-19 Food Worker Safety Act

As we have seen during the outbreak of COVID-19 across the Commonwealth, the continued access to safe healthy food is a crucial component of sustaining social distancing practices during a pandemic. Pennsylvania families rely on our robust network of grocers year round, but their role becomes all the more important during times in which non life sustaining businesses are not open.  Our grocers could not operate without workers at food processing/protein facilities across the Commonwealth.

In the coming weeks I will be introducing legislation to codify best practices for Pennsylvania’s food processing and protein facilities in order to protect Pennsylvania workers and ensure the operation of our food supply chain in times of crisis such as the current COVID-19 pandemic.  These practices will be related to social distancing within the workplace, paid leave, attendance policies, and protocols for protecting and notifying employees should a coworker become ill.

Please join me in cosponsoring this legislation to protect Pennsylvania’s food processors and protein facility employees. We must do all that we can to ensure they are protected during these incredibly challenging times.

Introduced as HB2492
