Subject: | Recognizing April 12, 2020, as “Drop Everything and Read (D.E.A.R.) Day” |
Every year on April 12, families, educators, students, and more gather together to celebrate “Drop Everything and Read (D.E.A.R.) Day.” This day encourages people to set aside at least 30 minutes of their day to devote to reading. The concept of D.E.A.R. is referenced in author Beverly Cleary’s novel, Ramona Quimby, Age 8, a Newbery Medal honoree. Because of the impact Ms. Cleary’s novels have on young readers, D.E.A.R. Day is celebrated every year on her birthday and throughout the whole month of April. D.E.A.R. Day allows individuals and families to celebrate and enjoy the act of reading without any distractions. D.E.A.R. Day is endorsed by various organizations, including the National Educational Association (NEA), National Parent Teacher Association (NPTA), and the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC). D.E.A.R. Day is also supported by schools, libraries, and bookstores, which celebrate the day with fun activities that advocate for reading and creative writing. The D.E.A.R. Day movement hopes to encourage children and families everywhere to immerse themselves in reading. To support a love of reading for all, please join me in co-sponsoring a resolution to recognize April 12, 2020, as “Drop Everything and Read (D.E.A.R.) Day” in Pennsylvania. |
