| Subject: | Resolution Recognizing April 2, 2020 as “International Children’s Book Day” |
| In 1967, the International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY) first established International Children’s Book Day to celebrate and promote the love of reading for children everywhere. This day, celebrated annually and globally around Hans Christian Andersen’s birthday, recognizes the power of reading and the role of books in the development and education of children throughout the world. Each year, one out of 70 countries is chosen to decide upon a theme and to invite a prominent author and illustrator from the host country to be featured. The United States National Section of IBBY, located in Illinois, last hosted International Children’s Book Day in 2013 with the theme “Bookjoy Around the World.” This year, Slovenia was chosen to sponsor International Children’s Book Day and decided upon the theme “Hunger for Words,” showcasing the work of children’s book author Peter Svetina and illustrator Damijan Stepančič. This day is often celebrated by reading stories by Hans Christian Andersen and exploring and exchanging stories from various cultures around the world. As a mother and supporter of education, I believe it has never been more essential to instill in our children the importance of reading and experiencing other cultures. Please join me in co-sponsoring a resolution to recognize April 2, 2020 as International Children’s Book Day in Pennsylvania. |
