MEMORANDUM

Posted: February 12, 2020 02:31 PM
From: Representative Brandon J. Markosek
To: All House members
Subject: Designating May 11-17, 2020, as “Stuttering Awareness Week” in Pennsylvania

Stuttering is a complex disorder that touches 70 million people all over the world and more than three million people in the United States alone. In our nation, about 1 in 30 children will stutter at some point. Sadly, although stuttering is a common neurological-based condition, children who stutter are bullied four times more than children who do not, and adults who stutter remain subject to discrimination in professional and social settings.

In an effort to celebrate, educate and spread the word about stuttering, I am introducing a resolution to recognize May 11 through 17, 2020, as “Stuttering Awareness Week” in Pennsylvania. As Stuttering Awareness Week is observed in May across the United States, let us seize the opportunity here in the Commonwealth to educate the public about and dismantle the stigma around stuttering. We have the opportunity as listeners to learn how to better communicate and empower speakers who stutter through education and advocacy.

Many if not most of us know someone – a family member, friend, coworker, or constituent – who stutters. As legislators, it is our responsibility to understand the struggles and stigmas these individuals may face. I hope you will join me in raising awareness for this important issue by becoming a cosponsor. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Jessica Luce in my Harrisburg office at (717) 772-4511 or via email at jluce@pahouse.net.
