MEMORANDUM

Posted: February 4, 2020 09:44 AM
From: Representative Barbara Gleim
To: All House members
Subject: Resolution Recognizing "April 21, 2020 as Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) Day"

In the next few weeks, I will be introducing a resolution recognizing “April 21, 2020 as Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) Day.”

My goal for this resolution is to call attention to the need for more CASA volunteers and support in order for the CASA program to expand beyond the existing 26 counties. These volunteers provide a wide array of assistance for abused and neglected children in dependency court proceedings.

Statewide there are 1,169 active CASA volunteers advocating for 2,129 children. It is evident that given the number of children in the foster care program, there is an urgent need for additional volunteers across the state.

CASA volunteers are deeply committed and trained advocates who work within the child welfare system and are appointed by dependency court judges to provide individualized attention to a child’s needs throughout his or her time in state custody. These volunteers give their time and support for children and families involved with the child welfare system through increased community involvement and awareness.

I encourage you to co-sponsor this resolution to give CASA volunteers the recognition they deserve and to expand the awareness of the need for volunteers.

Thank you.
