MEMORANDUM

From: Representative Joseph C. Hohenstein
To: All House members
Subject: Backup Generators in Nursing Homes

Having reliable power and heating and cooling systems in nursing homes and other senior care facilities can be a matter of life and death. Unfortunately, we all heard about the deaths of 12 residents at a Florida nursing home due to a power and air conditioning failure following Hurricane Irma in 2017. A lack of standardized backup generator requirements for senior care facilities across the country can exacerbate potentially tragic situations like the one in Florida.

Natural disasters, such as floods and landslides, and other extreme weather events can be unpredictable and having emergency plans in place, which include a dependable emergency power source, is more important than ever. To ensure a similar tragedy does not take place in Pennsylvania during severe weather, I will be introducing a bill which would establish generator requirements for long-term care nursing facilities, assisted living residences, personal care homes, and hospices.

It is our duty as public servants to do everything in our power to protect all Pennsylvanians, especially our most vulnerable loved ones. Please consider supporting this proposal that will directly impact and protect thousands of lives every day.

Introduced as HB2292
