MEMORANDUM

Posted: January 22, 2020 09:27 AM
From: Representative Wendy Ullman
To: All House members
Subject: Recognizing February 15, 2020, as "Love is Love Day"

Valentine's Day receives a great deal of media attention. Print and electronic press outlets nationwide share stories of couples proclaiming their love and commitment for one another. However, lesbian, gay, bisexual, and queer (LGBTQ) couples are often excluded from Valentine's Day media coverage.

Adolescence is a time of significant physical and social-emotional development for youth. For a variety of biological and social reasons, it is also the time when many LGBTQ youth begin to self-identify as such. During a time of year where many couples and loved ones express their love for each other, LGBTQ youth can be overwhelmed with their emotions and fear of not being accepted. Adolescence is a pivotal time of growth and change in a young person’s life and having a sense of community and belonging where they feel welcome can make a life changing impact.

I am introducing a resolution that would recognize February 15, 2020, as “Love is Love Day” in Pennsylvania. LGBTQ youth have described how hearing slurs, lacking resources relevant to their experience, being discouraged from having same-sex relationships, and being regularly misgendered made school a hostile environment, which in turn can impact health and well-being.

Please join me in celebrating all types of love. Your consideration and support are appreciated.
