Subject: Waiving the Fee for Copies of Marriage Licenses

As we get closer to the date when REAL ID will be required to enter federal facilities or board domestic flights, it is becoming apparent that a significant cost inequity exists across the state as some individuals must provide more documentation than others, especially if a marriage license is required or legal name change has occurred. This doesn’t affect only women. But it affects women the most.

When applying for REAL ID, individuals who have had a name change must show proof of their name change, and the most common people to have changed their name in our state are married women. Unfortunately, the cost to obtain a copy of a marriage license differs drastically by county and the cost can be significant.

My bill sets a uniform fee limit throughout the state for marriage license copies and waives this fee for individuals who request a copy of their marriage license for the purpose of obtaining state issued identification such as REAL ID.

Join me in supporting this legislation and help to make the cost of obtaining REAL ID more equitable for all Pennsylvanians.
