MEMORANDUM

Posted: January 21, 2020 11:06 AM
From: Representative Eddie Day Pashinski
To: All House members
Subject: March 2020 - Music in Our Schools Month

Music is a natural phenomenon which captures every human emotion by producing a series of pitches, sounds and rhythms, creating a response of joy, sorrow, excitement or pride. Music is naturally therapeutic for the mind and body, and it is vital for people to deal with the challenges of life. Virtually every society known to man has identified some form of music as an element of daily living. That is why I will be introducing a resolution designating March 2020 as “Music in Our Schools Month” in Pennsylvania.

The importance of music education in our schools cannot be downplayed. The study of music offers many benefits to those who participate, such as developing creativity and problem-solving skills, as well as understanding of history and culture. Research has shown that children who partake in music education at an early age are more likely to pursue higher education, have lower high school dropout rates and score significantly higher on standardized tests than students not involved in music studies.

Music education continues to be an integral part of our state’s overall educational system. Music educators in Pennsylvania are committed to maintaining and improving school music programs for students of all socio-economic backgrounds without regard to their musical abilities. With this in mind, it is fitting that we recognize the overall importance of music education in this state and the tireless efforts of music educators by setting aside March 2020 as “Music in Our Schools Month’ here in Pennsylvania.
