MEMORANDUM

From: Representative Christopher M. Rabb
To: All House members
Subject: Condolence Resolution: Honoring the Life of Philadelphia native, Dr. Noel Ignatiev

I will soon be introducing a resolution honoring the life and accomplishments of scholar and activist Dr. Noel Ignatiev, who passed away on November 9, 2019, at the age of 78.

Dr. Noel Ignatiev began his journey to academia at the University of Pennsylvania before leaving in 1961 for Chicago, Illinois to work as a steelworker. As a steelworker, he helped organize his fellow workers and participated in labor actions to demand better working conditions.

After being laid off from the steel mill in 1984, Dr. Ignatiev applied to the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Despite not having a bachelor’s degree, he was accepted and proceeded to receive a Master’s Degree in Education in 1985 and Doctorate in the History of American Civilization nine years later. Later on, he became a fellow at Harvard’s W.E.B. Du Bois Institute. His academic work proposed the view that the concept of race is more about preserving power and privilege rather than about ancestry or identity.

Please join me in honoring the life and memory of this distinguished Pennsylvanian, Dr. Noel Ignatiev, and extending condolence to his family, friends, and colleagues.
