MEMORANDUM

Posted: January 15, 2020 01:17 PM
From: Representative John T. Galloway
To: All House members
Subject: Designating March 2020 as "Ancient Order of Hibernians Month"

Pennsylvania was pivotal in the formation of the Ancient Order of Hibernians (AOH). The AOH, which was established in 1836 to protect Irish immigrants to the United States from ethnic and religious bigotry, can trace its origins back to 16th century Ireland, when secret societies were established to defend the Irish people and Roman Catholic Church against discrimination during the Protestant Reformation. Today, the AOH consists of more than 7,500 members across the Commonwealth and over 80,000 members overall in the United States, Canada and Ireland.

Currently, the AOH connects members with their ancestral homeland through the promotion of Irish heritage and culture, in addition to donating millions of dollars annually to charitable causes. It is for these reasons and more that I am introducing a resolution designating the month of March 2020 as “Ancient Order of Hibernians Month” in Pennsylvania.

Please join me in commemorating the AOH’s important role in Irish-American history and Pennsylvania society.
