MEMORANDUM

Posted: January 14, 2020 04:04 PM
From: Representative Ed Gainey
To: All House members
Subject: Resolution – “Martin Luther King, Jr., Week of Remembrance”

Dr. Martin Luther King was a singular man of unshakeable faith and conviction who marched from protest to protest through numerous towns and cities across this country preaching a message of non-violence aimed at securing equal protection for all, regardless of race. During his brief life, Dr. King used his leadership and his eloquent voice to convey his belief that peaceful resistance could awaken the American conscious and advance the cause of civil rights and justice. Accordingly, to commemorate and honor the legacy of the man who was MLK, I will introduce a resolution to recognize the week of January 20, 2020, as the “Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Week of Remembrance” in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

Dr. King devoted his life to fighting segregation and racial injustice by nonviolent means. He was instrumental in affecting change to public policy. As the central figure of the Civil Rights Movement, Dr. King’s activism and advocacy resulted in the repeal of the post-Reconstruction Era Jim Crow laws. His advocacy was instrumental to the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Voting Rights Act of 1965, and other anti-discrimination laws aimed at ending economic, legal, and social segregation in America. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964.

To this day, Dr. King remains a source of inspiration for all Americans. Accordingly, I thank you in advance for joining me as a sponsor of this resolution to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
