| Subject: | Assisted Living & Long-Term Care Resident Bill of Rights |
| Sadly, elder abuse in our Commonwealth is a far too-common reality for many individuals. With over 18,000 reported cases between 2016 and 2017, it has become one of the most alarming health concerns we face as our aging population grows faster than ever. For our minority and marginalized communities, the consequences of implicit bias and abuse are even higher. All communities must be offered proper protections while they continue the span of their lives in our assisted living and long-term care nursing facilities. People are entitled to a safe and fulfilling quality of life, regardless of their race, gender, sexual orientation, age or ethnicity. Just as we enjoy the comforts and safety of our own homes, residents in these facilities should be afforded the same. These bills would explicitly articulate the needs and rights of residents in assisted living facilities and long-term care nursing facilities so that they may be protected from the unfortunate discrimination many have received throughout their lifetime. For far too long, too many residents have been denied the appropriate level of care and compassion that they deserve. We cannot move forward in addressing the elder abuse crisis across the state without including all Pennsylvanians in the conversation -- this Bill of Rights for assisted living and long-term care residents does just that. Please join me in supporting this vital legislation. |
