Subject: Study Funding Process for Charter Schools

In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution directing the Joint State Government Commission to conduct a study on the way in which charter schools are funded in this Commonwealth. This study will include:
  • A review of charter school financing laws in operation throughout the United States;
  • An assessment of the actual cost of educating a child in a charter school, regional charter school, a cyber school and a school district or intermediate unite utilizing cyber classes;
  • An evaluation of the current process by which charter school entities are funded; and
  • Recommendations on the appropriate funding for the operation and management of charter school entities.

    Since the enactment of the Charter School Law in 1997, there has been a growing debate over how the Commonwealth funds charter schools. This study will provide the members of the legislature with the information necessary to ensure that charter schools continue to be a strong and quality choice option for our Commonwealth’s students.

    Please join me in sponsoring this resolution.
