MEMORANDUM

Posted: December 6, 2019 10:44 AM
From: Representative Ryan E. Mackenzie
To: All House members
Subject: January 23, 2020 as Maternal Health Awareness Day

In the near future I will be introducing a Resolution to designate January 23, 2020 as Maternal Health Awareness Day in Pennsylvania.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a pregnancy-related death is the death of a woman while pregnant or within 1 year of the end of a pregnancy, regardless of the outcome of that pregnancy, but not from an accidental or incidental cause.

In 1986, the CDC created a Pregnancy Mortality Surveillance System to find the causes of maternal death in the United States. Despite a decline in maternal deaths in other parts of the world, the Pregnancy Mortality Surveillance System found that the United States reported pregnancy-related deaths from a low of 7.2 deaths per 100,000 live births in 1987 to 16.9 deaths per 100,000 live births in 2016.

My Resolution will continue to bring awareness to the many issues related to maternal health and mortality in Pennsylvania. It will also continue promoting the initiatives to reduce maternal mortality in our state such as the recently created Maternal Mortality Review Committee which will address the issue of increasing maternal mortality in Pennsylvania and develop strategies for the prevention of maternal deaths.

Please join me in cosponsoring this important Resolution to bring awareness to pregnancy-related deaths in Pennsylvania.
