Subject: “Tyler’s Law” – Health Insurance Coverage for PANDAS/PANS

PANS (Pediatric Acute Onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome) and PANDAS (PAN Disorder Associated with Streptococcal Infection) are conditions where a child will develop a sudden onset of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and tic disorders as a result of a streptococcal infection. The symptoms can explode in severity overnight and about 1 in every 200 children will be diagnosed with the disorders.

Treatment for these disorders often require a mix of medication and therapy, and can cost $12,000 or more in out-of-pocket expenses per treatment. PANDAS/PANS has affected many individuals in my district, including Tyler, who began showing symptoms at six years-old and has been receiving treatment ever since his diagnosis. Unfortunately, like many families in their situation, Tyler’s family has experienced difficulties in securing reliable insurance coverage for his costly treatments.

In order to help ease the financial burden on families, I am proposing legislation that would require insurance companies to offer coverage for PANDAS/PANS treatment here in Pennsylvania. Similar legislation has already been adopted in Arkansas, Delaware, Illinois, Minnesota and New Hampshire. Please join me in co-sponsoring this legislation to ensure that all children affected by these disorders receive the treatment they need. Thank you.
