MEMORANDUM

Posted: November 20, 2019 01:58 PM
From: Representative Thomas P. Murt
To: All House members
Subject: Veterans Registry and PASSHE Partnership

I intend to introduce legislation that would establish a veteran support and partnership program between the Pennsylvania Veterans Registry, sponsored by the Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs, and the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE).

This bilateral agreement would provide our 14 state schools with information on identified and registered veterans. The information tracked by the registry would include an option for veterans to select if they are interested in pursuing higher education, training programs, as well as professional development events held at the respective colleges/universities. In addition, there would be a choice to self-identify if the veteran needs assistance with counseling and life changes through their transition as a student.

All data gathered can help PASSHE schools specifically identify the veteran learner and tailor programs that will best suit their needs and academic desire. This program would expand resources and academic opportunities for the men and women who have served our country.

PASSHE schools offer more than 2,300 degree and certificate programs in over 530 areas of study. This legislation would benefit veterans to pursue higher education by connecting them with the information they may need in the classroom and beyond. In addition to the many veterans the program would serve, PASSHE schools can utilize this program as a recruitment tool to increase enrollment.

We have a duty to support our veterans and empower them to continue their education and training to lead successful lives following their time of service. Please join me in supporting this bill, our PASSHE schools, and the veterans that have loyally served our nation.
