House of Representatives
Session of 2019 - 2020 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: November 18, 2019 02:56 PM
From: Representative Movita Johnson-Harrell
To: All House members
Subject: State Observed Religious Holidays

The contributions of Muslim, Jewish, Buddhist, Hindu, Sikh, and Pan-African constituents have given rise to diverse communities, workplaces, and local economies across the Commonwealth. Pennsylvania has a rich cultural history of diversity, and it was founded on the principles of religious freedom and tolerance.
Given this heritage, it is imperative that we take the time to create state observance of minority faith holidays. Therefore, I plan to introduce legislation that would amend the Legal Holiday Law and Banking Code of 1965, recognizing Eid Al-Fitr, Yom Kippur, Vesak, Vaisakhi, Diwali, and Kwanzaa as state observed holidays.
As stewards of diversity and equality, it is my hope that you will join me in this collective effort to further promote a culture of religious inclusion within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Your consideration is greatly appreciated.
