MEMORANDUM

Posted: November 13, 2019 10:44 AM
From: Representative Bridget M. Kosierowski
To: All House members
Subject: 2020 as the Year of the Nurse and Midwife

At the forefront of healthcare, the nursing and midwifery professions impact all ages and socioeconomic levels of society. Whether it is the birth of a child, recuperating after a traumatic accident, or providing end-of-life care, nurses and midwives play a vital role in some of the most important events our communities experience at all stages of life. There are over 192,000 registered nurses, 700 nurse-midwives and 12,082 certified registered nurse practitioners who are currently practicing in the Commonwealth, making crucial contributions to our health systems and to the health of the people they serve.

The nursing and midwifery professions serve as a crucial bridge between community members and the complex healthcare system, and in bringing access to healthcare services to everyone. In recognition of this essential role, the World Health Organization has designated the year 2020 as the “Year of the Nurse and Midwife.” This celebration coincides with the 200th birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing whose innovative approach to nursing transformed and defined the nursing profession.

It is therefore important that we recognize the contributions made by the nurses and midwives of our Commonwealth. Please join me in supporting this opportunity to bring recognition to their service by designating 2020 as the “Year of the Nurse and Midwife” in Pennsylvania.
