| Subject: | "Steve Blass Day" in Pennsylvania |
| I am proud to represent Mr. Steve Blass in the House of Representatives. Blass just wrapped up 60 years of involvement with the Pittsburgh Pirates. A tremendous career began in 1960 when Blass was just 18 years old and signed with the Pirates right out of high school. Blass has been a fixture at Three Rivers Stadium and PNC Park since his major league debut as a pitcher in 1964. Mr. Blass ranks 17th on the Pittsburgh Pirate’s all-time win list, 7th in strikeouts and 16th in shutouts. Blass was on the mound on October 17, 1971 when the Pittsburgh Pirates ended the season with a championship win against the Baltimore Orioles during the 7th game of the World Series. Additionally, Blass is the last National League pitcher to throw a complete game, which he did during that 1971 World Series victory game. After retiring from the mound in 1974, Blass worked in private business in Pittsburgh while remaining heavily involved with the Pirates. In 1983, he joined the legendary Hall of Fame Broadcaster Bob Prince on Pirate cable telecast. In 1986, Blass officially joined the broadcasting team at the Pirates, where he added colorful commentary from the booth for 34 seasons. While he now steps away from broadcasting, Blass will continue serve as a Pittsburgh Pirates ambassador for the 2020 season. A native of Canaan, CT., Blass and his wife Karen live in the Mt. Washington neighborhood of the City Pittsburgh and have two sons, five grandchildren and one great grandchild. I hope you will join me in honoring Steve Blass and to celebrate a true Pittsburgh Pirate icon by co-sponsoring this resolution to designate October 28, 2019 as “Steve Blass Day” in Pennsylvania. |
