Subject: "Hunger & Homelessness Awareness Week" November 16 through 24, 2019

On any given day, there are about 13,512 homeless people in Pennsylvania, 982 of whom are veterans and 684 of whom are unaccompanied youth. Further, 1 in 8 Pennsylvanians and 1 in 6 Pennsylvania children struggles with hunger. Even if you do not know anyone who is affected by hunger or homelessness, these struggles still affect you in one way or another: they have a negative impact on the economy by increasing the need for publicly funded services and harming the health, productivity and livelihoods of those they touch.
As the weather turns cold and homeless Pennsylvanians grapple with the need to find shelter, I believe it is an opportune time to raise awareness about the impact of hunger and homelessness on our neighbors and communities. That is why I am introducing a resolution designating the week of November 16 through 24 as Hunger& Homelessness Awareness Week in Pennsylvania. This national celebration started in 1975 at Pennsylvania’s own Villanova University, and has since grown to include hundreds of institutions of higher education, public schools and community organizations advocating for an end to hunger and homelessness.
It is my hope that this resolution will encourage Pennsylvanians to get involved in awareness week activities as organizers, volunteers or attendees, and to remind us all to think of those who are struggling this winter. Please join me in re-acknowledging our strong belief that no one in Pennsylvania and beyond should have to live without a permanent home or filling, nutritious meals.
