Subject: Recognizing Indigenous People

The topic of immigration is one of the most debated and divisive of our day. But the truth is, unless we are indigenous to a land, we have all descended from immigrants.

Indigenous people are peoples or ethnic groups who are the original inhabitants of a given region, not groups that have settled, occupied or colonized an area more recently. In the United States, Native American Indians, Alaska Natives and Native Hawaiians are recognized as Indigenous People. Of the 50 states, Pennsylvania has one of the most robust Native American Indian histories.

Without the help of our country’s Indigenous People, our Commonwealth and our nation may not have survived. It was through their contributions in agricultural development, medicinal discoveries, environmental preservation, exploration and commerce that our country was able to expand, develop and prosper. History has often not recognized the contributions of Indigenous People.

Please join me in my pledge to recognize Indigenous People during the week following the second Monday in October and throughout the entire Month of October 2019. Celebrating diversity strengthens the relationship between all citizens.

Thank you in advance for your consideration.
