Subject:	Resolution designating September 23-29, 2019, as “Safe2Say Something Week” in Pennsylvania.

In the near future, I will be introducing a resolution designating the week of September 23 through 29, 2019, as “Safe2Say Something Week” in Pennsylvania. The Safe2Say Something Program was established by Act 44 of 2018 to be an anonymous resource for students, teachers, and community members to report behavior perceived to be threatening to an individual or a school entity. The Attorney General’s Office partnered with Sandy Hook Promise to administer the Safe2Say Something Program. This partnership trains individuals to recognize warning signs and signals from those who may be a threat to themselves or others and how to report those concerns through the Safe2Say Something Program. The Safe2Say Something Program began accepting reports on January 14, 2019, and continues to accept reports 24 hours per day, 7 days a week, and 365 days per year. From January 2019 through the end of the 2018-2019 school year, the Office of Attorney General and Sandy Hook Promise have trained approximately 864,333 students on the Program. The Attorney General’s Office first annual report was released on August 1, 2019, and it stated that since the Safe2Say Program began accepting reports in January 2019, more than 23,490 reports had been submitted. While initially intended to prevent threats against schools in Pennsylvania, the Safe2Say Something Program has highlighted a variety of behavior and mental health concerns in students. Bullying, self- harm, suicidal intentions, depression, and anxiety are the top five event types reported through the Program. The Safe2Say Something Program is considered a national model to protect students, teachers, school employees, and the community.
