Subject: Dwarfism Awareness Month

According to a research study, it has been estimated that more than 30,000 people in the United States and more than 650,000 people around the world are affected by dwarfism. Dwarfism is the result of a genetic or medical condition which leaves an individual with a short stature, generally around 4 feet 10 inches or less in height for an adult.

While dwarfism is a recognized condition under the Americans with Disabilities Act, many individuals affected by dwarfism lead autonomous, healthy lives. However, despite these individual’s ability to lead normal lives, many may still be subjected to misperceptions and negative connotations.

In an attempt to challenge these misperceptions, I believe the state of Pennsylvania should join other states in recognizing October as Dwarfism Awareness Month. This resolution would help challenge the stigma associated with individuals affected by dwarfism and ensure that they are treated with respect and dignity. Those affected by dwarfism deserve equal treatment and should be defined by their character, not by their condition.

Please join me in co-sponsoring this legislation and recognize October as Dwarfism Awareness Month in Pennsylvania.
