MEMORANDUM

Posted: September 9, 2019 09:35 AM
From: Representative Maria P. Donatucci
To: All House members
Subject: Resolution Designating October 11, 2019, as the “Day of the Girl”

On December 19, 2011, the United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution 66/170 to declare October 11 of each year as the “International Day of the Girl Child.” This year, the “Day of the Girl” has the theme of “GirlForce: Unscripted and Unstoppable,” and it encourages girls to break down barriers imposed by exclusion and stereotypes.

Girls around the world and in this Commonwealth still face many challenges as they transition into adulthood. Girls today are growing up in a world where women are still paid less on average than men, where they can be judged for wanting an education and career instead of children, and where numerous other stereotypes encourage girls to limit themselves and their ambitions. As such, I will be introducing a resolution to designate October 11, 2019, as the “Day of the Girl” in this Commonwealth and to encourage an open and honest dialogue surrounding the challenges and barriers girls face, and to celebrate the achievements of girls.

I hope you will join me in supporting this resolution. Thank you.
