MEMORANDUM

Posted: September 6, 2019 03:25 PM
From: Representative Brian Sims
To: All House members
Subject: HIV/AIDS and Aging Awareness Day

As of 2016, it is estimated that nearly 38,700 Americans have Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). Of that number, 17% of new diagnoses were among people aged 50 or older. In recent years, however, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has recorded a noticeable decline in the rate of new HIV infections among people both below and above the age of 50, largely due to the advancement of effective HIV treatments and advocacy for HIV awareness and education.

It is imperative that we as Pennsylvanians continue to make the effort to properly educate and generate awareness about a disease that has affected so many individuals in our nation. The more we work to encourage advocacy for HIV/AIDS awareness, the better we can both protect ourselves and our families from infection and swiftly find a cure. The AIDS Institute launched the first National HIV/AIDS and Aging Awareness Day in 2008 to bring attention to the issues the aging population encounters when it comes to HIV prevention and treatment. Therefore, I plan to introduce a resolution designating September 18, 2019, as “HIV/AIDS and Aging Awareness Day” in Pennsylvania.

As stewards of proper education and health practices for our citizens, it is my hope that you will join me in this collective effort to further spread awareness. Your consideration is highly appreciated.
