Subject: | Civic Education Awareness Month – October 2019 |
No democracy can survive without active participation by engaged citizens. However, study after study finds that increasing numbers of Americans are disengaged with civic and political institutions. This disengagement mirrors a decline in civic education in this country. For this reason, we are introducing a resolution to designate October 2019 as “Civic Education Awareness Month” in Pennsylvania. Through civic education, young people learn how our government works, the history of this great nation, and the rights and responsibilities we all have as Americans. This backbone of knowledge connects them to our democratic system and shows them how they can make an impact in it. We must, as a nation, take responsibility for ensuring the next generation is prepared to take an active role in our democracy. Please join us in raising awareness of the importance of civic education by co-sponsoring this resolution. |
