MEMORANDUM

Posted: August 6, 2019 04:35 PM
From: Representative Malcolm Kenyatta
To: All House members
Subject: Honoring the Life and Accomplishments of Toni Morrison

It is with heavy hearts that we mourn the loss of Toni Morrison – an American literary icon – who died on August 5, 2019, following complications of pneumonia. To acknowledge Morrison’s impact on our society, I intend to introduce a resolution commemorating her life.

The author of 11 novels as well as children’s books and essay collections, Morrison’s work explored black identity in the United States and garnered both critical and commercial success. Her most lauded writings include “Song of Solomon,” which received the National Book Critics Award in 1977, and “Beloved,” which won the Pulitzer Prize in 1988. In 1993, she became the first black woman to win the Nobel Prize in Literature, and in 2012, she received the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Morrison’s gripping prose continues to resonate in our society, tapping into the psychological impact of slavery while offering insight into the soul of black America. As she wrote, “Freeing yourself was one thing; claiming ownership of that freed self was another.”

Join me in honoring the life and accomplishments of this monumental figure.
