MEMORANDUM

Posted: July 18, 2019 08:24 AM
From: Representative James R. Roebuck, Jr.
To: All House members
Subject: Resolution Proclaiming 2019 as the International Year of the Periodic Table

This year is the 150th anniversary of the Periodic Table. Published by Dmitry Mendeleev in 1869, its use of organizing principles based on the chemical and physical properties of the elements has enabled scientists to predict the appearance and properties of matter on this Earth and everywhere in the Universe. The Periodic Table has also been a unifying feature of sciences used by students and professionals in physics, biology, chemistry, astronomy and other natural sciences.

Given the importance of the Periodic Table to sciences across the spectrum, I propose making 2019 the International Year of the Periodic Table. Observation of this year will increase understanding of the role of chemistry and other sciences in meeting the world’s needs. It will encourage interest in chemistry and science among young people, and will examine future roles and challenges of chemistry and science.

Establishing 2019 as the International Year of the Periodic Table will honor this great achievement in the sciences and send a positive message about the value of science to Pennsylvanians. Please join me in co-sponsoring this resolution on the importance of the Periodic Table.
