| Since the early 1800s, historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) have been established to serve the educational needs of African Americans and others. These institutions have played an integral role in providing all students, regardless of race, a chance to grow and develop their talents. According to the United States Department of Education, HBCUs currently welcome students from all backgrounds, including more than 8,000 F-1 international students. Today, the United States has more than 100 Historically Black Colleges and Universities with the oldest - Cheyney University - residing in our Commonwealth. Pennsylvania is home to two HBCUs; Cheyney University of Pennsylvania was established in 1837, and Lincoln University was founded in 1854. These institutions have created leaders in business, law, government, academia, and the military. The rigorous education HBCUs offer have contributed to our national economic competitiveness and prosperity. HBCUs are a source of accomplishment and great pride for the African American community as well as the entire nation. Please join me in recognizing “Historically Black Colleges and Universities Week” on September 8-14, 2019, on which we reaffirm our support for HBCUs and acknowledge the influence they have had and will continue to have in our Commonwealth. |
