MEMORANDUM

Subject: Resolution Recognizing the 30th Anniversary of the Tiananmen Square Protests

This week, we plan to introduce a resolution that would recognize the 30th Anniversary of the Tiananmen Square Protests.

In the spring of 1989, peaceful demonstrations were being held in Beijing’s Tiananmen Square by those calling upon the government of the People’s Republic of China for democratic reform, elimination of corruption, acceleration of economic and political reform and protection of human rights, particularly the freedoms of expression and assembly. Over 1 million people joined in this peaceful process. When authorities failed to persuade these demonstrators to leave Tiananmen Square, martial law was declared. On June 3, 1989, under orders from the government, armed soldiers and tanks surrounded the area. The following day soldiers opened fire on the crowds, and tanks crushed some protestors and onlookers to death, inflicting a high number of casualties on demonstrators and onlookers. Many surviving demonstrators were detained and imprisoned, forced to face reeducation through labor, as well as being subjected to torture and imprisonment for decades, often without being granted a trial of any kind.

As we observe the recent 30th Anniversary of these horrible days in China’s history, this resolution resolves that the House of Representatives recognizes the events of June 3 – 5th, 1989, and expresses sympathy and solidarity to the families of those killed, tortured and imprisoned for their participation in these pro-democracy demonstrations.

Please join us in co-sponsoring this resolution.
