MEMORANDUM

Posted: June 3, 2019 04:27 PM
From: Representative Maria P. Donatucci
To: All House members
Subject: National Breast Cancer Awareness Month & National Mammography Day

One in eight women will develop invasive breast cancer in 2019 in the United States, while it is estimated that 3,000 men will be diagnosed this year. Though breast cancer is one of the most common cancer types with optimistic outcomes in many cases, efforts to engage men and women in preventive and proactive care must continue.

Despite decades of innovative research and advocacy that breast cancer has received, far too many lives have still been claimed by the grueling journey that a cancer diagnosis can bring. This year alone, close to 300,000 new diagnoses will be made. Of those, almost 42,000 mothers, daughters, sisters, and friends are estimated to lose their hard-fought battle against breast cancer.

It is no surprise that early detection is key in the survival of those who are diagnosed with cancer. Currently, the United States is home to 3.1 million breast cancer survivors thanks to the revolutionary advancement of breast cancer detection and treatment. Therefore, let us recognize the month of October 2019 as “National Breast Cancer Awareness Month” and October 18, 2019, as “National Mammography Day.” Please join me in encouraging Pennsylvanians to take control of their health and seek preventive screening for breast cancer to ensure healthier and stronger Pennsylvanians.
