Something is very wrong. After a multitude of examinations and tests the doctor comes in. The diagnosis is terminal. The doctor explains that there may be weeks, maybe months, but 6 months at best. The news is shocking. All the options are laid out, so an informed decision for care can be made. But are all the options really given?

In Pennsylvania, one critical and compassionate option is left off the table – the ability for one to choose to not suffer through a terminal illness and to pass peacefully. This option is given for our animal companions when they are suffering. In fact, it is considered the most humane thing to do at times, or even the last act of love. Why wouldn’t we want to be able to do the same for ourselves?

My legislation will allow Pennsylvania residents over 18 who have been diagnosed with a terminal illness to voluntarily request a prescription that would end their life in a compassionate, dignified and humane manner. The bill provides a number of protections to ensure that the decision to end one’s life is informed, voluntary and made without any kind of coercion, including the ability to rescind the decision at any time. My proposal is based largely on the Oregon model law and the recently enacted New Jersey law.

Please join me in allowing individuals who are suffering from terminal illnesses in Pennsylvania the ability to choose from all options in their end-of-life care, including compassionate assisted dignified death. Thank you in advance for your consideration.
